Are you interested in volunteering with your pet and joining Pet Therapy of the Ozarks? Check out our membership process.

Step 1:
Read our membership rules of conduct, workshop and evaluation description, and FAQs.

Step 2:
Fill out and mail the application for our workshop and evaluation. The completed application paperwork (including proof of AKC CGC certificate and current vaccination records) and $15 non-refundable Workshop fee must be received at least two weeks before the workshop date. (AKC CGC requirements)

Step 3:
Attend the workshop (held twice a year on a Saturday in August and February). This is a practice session for the evaluation. Both consist of eight stations (much like the CGC test) to assess the dog and handler. Any areas which need improvement will be highlighted with suggested corrective actions.

Step 4:
Pass the evaluation one month after taking the workshop (held twice a year on a Saturday in September and March). Pay the yearly membership fee.

Step 5:
Attend two supervised visits with an experienced PTO team and receive a positive feedback report.

Step 6:
Schedule a regular community visit with the facilities director at any of our official PTO locations with openings for new teams (must make at least one visit a month to remain an active member).

What makes an ideal pet therapy team?

Pet Therapy of the Ozarks strives to ensure that our therapy teams are the best representatives of pet therapy that they can be. A pet therapy team consists of a human handler and their pet. Both play equally important roles in a successful team.

What makes a good handler?

  • Loves sharing their pet with others

  • Is comfortable engaging people in light conversation

  • Has a willingness to volunteer in their community on a regular basis

  • Exhibits excellent voice commands and gentle leash control of their pet

  • Is very well attuned to their pet’s needs and limitations

What makes a good therapy dog?

  • Has a happy, friendly temperment

  • Loves to learn and wants to please

  • Not aggressive or reactive to other animals or people

  • Likes to be touched, handled, hugged, kissed and is not scared of people, loud noises, or strange places

  • Easily follows handler’s commands

Important points:

  1. All pets must be current with rabies vaccine administered by vet.

  2. Dogs must be one year old to be tested.

  3. We do not certify pets to be brought to work.

  4. We do not certify service or emotional support animals.

  5. Not all dogs want to or can become a certified therapy dog. Make sure you know your dog's temperament.
